Lush plant life grows on the uniquely undulating outcroppings of the Monterey Formation at the southern end of Newport Beach, California. The Miocene era Monterey Formation is comprised mainly of diatomite and since it contains some of the largest oil and gas reserves in the continental United States it has been widely studied for over a century. The Newport Beach coastline is a wonderful example of syncline and anticline folds in the bedrock.
