CareyPhotography > The dried mud surface of the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park, California, in the late afternoon light. The playa is an almost perfectly flat dry lake bed nestled between the Cottonwood Mountains to the east and the Last Chance Range to the west. Any rain water that washes down onto the playa quickly evaporates under the hot Death Valley sun, and the mud cracks into a polygonal mosaic.

CareyPhotography > The sliding rocks of the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park, California leave strange tracks behind them, frequently at right angles. Sometimes it appears as if they started moving in one direction, then changed their mind and headed off in a completely different direction.

CareyPhotography > A group of adventurers set off across the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park, California in search of the mysterious moving rocks. Although the rocks slide slowly across the dried mud surface of the playa, leaving visible tracks behind, no one has ever actually seen them moving.
