The Trona Pinnacles
The Trona Pinnacles, 20 miles east of Ridgecrest, California, is one of the most unusual geologic formations in the Mojave Desert. More than 500 tufa (calcium carbonate) spires rise from the bed of the Searles Dry Lake Basin. The Trona Pinnacles were designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968 by the U.S. Department of Interior and have been featured in many commercials and science fiction movies.

Trona Pinnacles Trail, 6 miles south of Trona, California, is a 24.6 mile sandy road through the surreal landscape of the National Natural Landmark and scene of many science fiction movies. The pinnacles are tufa (calcium carbonate) deposits that rise up from the dry Searles Lake bed, reaching as high as 140 feet.
