The Big Dipper and North Star wouldn't rise until closer to morning, but I decided to make my first attempt at star trails anyway. I was too tired and lazy to dig my compass out of my backpack, so I just picked a spot in the sky and opened the shutter without thinking that something in the foreground might help make a more pleasing composition. The shutter was open for maybe half an hour or so when all of a sudden a group of FJs came rolling down the trail headed toward our camp. Ruined the shot, and I was too tired to try again.
There will be plenty of opportunities to try again.
