The U.S. military estimates that this was carved some time between 1863 and 1866 in the rock face above the spring at Camp Rock Spring. "Stuart" was most likely a member of the 4th Infantry Regiment - California Volunteers. Further proof that man has always felt the need to leave his mark; if this had been carved by native Indians we would call it a petroglyph, and if it had been done more recently we would call it vandalism or grafitti.
