A tallow cooking stove found on the grounds of Mission San Juan Capistrano, the 7th of 21 California Missions founded by Father Junipero Serra. The Mission was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1812; excavations in 1935 unearthed the Missions's industrial center. Tallow, the rendered fat of animals such as cows and sheep, is used to produce soap, candles, grease and ointment.
