A Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) stalks the salt pools of the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve in Newport Beach, California. The 752-acre Ecological Reserve is one of California's last remaining estuaries, a place where salt and fresh waters meet, and a salt water marsh. Almost 200 species of birds live there, and migrating birds stop to rest during the winter months.
